Practical Halogen Floor Lamps and Lamp Shades for Floor Lamps

Many contemporary floor lamps have a tall stand that is topped with an open bowl shaped shade covering a halogen light bulb. These types of lamps were originally called torchieres, showing their French roots. Halogen bulbs are smaller bulbs which have twice the life of a standard bulb. These lamps produce a very bright light. In order for these bulbs to work, halogen gas combines with tungsten filament in a chemical reaction. They are much more energy efficient than standard fluorescent lights or incandescent light bulbs.

Halogen floor lamps can be great for lighting a space because the light is so bright. They generally shine upward and reflect light onto the ceiling. Halogen lamps should not be used as a normal source of light for a room, but work great when used to give a wash of light over the walls or ceiling.

While halogen floor lamps tend to have a tall stand, there are some options as far as style preferences are concerned. Purchase a halogen floor lamp with an arm that could be extended over a chair or table which turns the lamp into a practical reading lamp. Some lamps even have two arms at different levels. Most halogen lamps have a globe underneath the bulb that projects light upward, but some have a shade over the bulb similar to a regular lamp sending the light towards the ground. Each of these lamp shades and bases whatever the style come in a variety of finishes and colors. The stand also comes in a variety of styles such as chrome, brass, or nickel finish. Lamp shades for floor lamps are available for all types of floor lamps.

Always use caution when doing maintenance on your halogen lamp. The heat in a halogen lamp tends to concentrate at the surface. Globes on a halogen floor lamp will be hot to touch after the lamp has been on for a while. Halogen bulbs could be contaminated by fingers therefore you must use a paper towel or gloves to change the bulb. If the bulb becomes contaminated, it may weaken, and explode causing injury.

Halogen floor lamps can be found starting at thirty dollars for a cheaper one to several hundred dollars.
