Maximize the Effectiveness of The Dumbbell Using a Power Rack

Dumbell weights have been around for a very long time dating back to ancient Greece, however,  the modern dumbbell with power rack combination did not become popular until the 1960’s after an article was published about them in an “Iron Man Magazine”.

First lets take a close look at what is a dumbbell. The term “dumb bell” is from back in Tudor England (1485 – 1603) when athletes would train their upper body strength with large bells similar to ones found in cathedrals. They chose to remove the clappers from these bells since they did not wish to make a large ruckus while working out, hence the term dumb meaning soundless.

Modern dumbell weights come in 3 types. Adjustable, fixed weight and selectorized. An adjustable dumbbell is a metal bar that lets you add balanced weights to either end. Fixed weight are prefabricated into the shape of a dumbbell and you cannot adjust the weight. Selectorized are mechanically adjustable weights. You can change the weight by turning a dial or pin.

The power rack is most commonly used with the adjustable dumbbell. You can set it up to conveniently bench press or any other form of weight training without the constraints of a home gym machine. A modern power rack is made with four vertical posts with two adjustable bar holders on either side. The power rack, although simple, is a very useful way if you are into serious weight training. It is easy to use and you can just focus on your workout instead of trying to fiddle around trying to adjust many settings.

When setting up your in home gym it is also important to get a comfortable high quality bench also for use with your dumbell weights and rack. Having high quality and comfortable equipment can help reduce the risk of injury to yourself and make for a more enjoyable workout.
